RTC Remote Tools 1.6 : Let In/ Connect setup

If you want your Client's PC to open a Port to the Internet so you can connect to them directly, you will use the LetIn/Control setup described below. In this setup, your Clients will have to open a Port in their router/firewall, so you can connect to their PC when you want to remotely take control. This is not a usual customer support setup, since your clients will have to configure their router or firewall to forward a Port to their PC. But, this could be a meaningful setup if you want to take control over your Home PC when you are on the road. Please check the "GoOut/Accept_setup" if you want to use RTC Remote Tools to help your customers and you want to set up your router/firewall, so they can connect to you without tempering with their config.

-----------------

1) Load RTC Remote Client on the PC which you want to connect remotely to take control over it. I will call this one the "client PC".

2) Load RTC Remote Control on the PC from which you want to take control (where you want to sit to control the client PC). I will call this one the "Control PC".

3) Start the RTC Remote Client program on your "Client's PC" and set it up ...

Since we want to allow Remote Controls to connect to this PC, we have to click on the "Let In" button (left). When using the "LenIn" option, we will be acting as a server (Listening on a port and waiting for connections). Now, let's prepare the Remote Client PC, so it starts waiting for Remote Controls to connect ...

• Choose a Port number ("Use Port"), through which Remote controls will be able to reach this client PC. Default setting is 1974, you can change this to any other Port which is free on your PC. Port numbers are in range from 1 to 65535, you should use ports between 1025 and 65000. You will need this number for the Remote Control.

• Choose a Username and Password (anything you like). Username and password are case sensitive and accept everything you can enter. You have to remember what you entered, you will need this for the Control side.

• Remember the Address displayed in the "My Address" Combo Box. This is the IP Address which the RTC Remote Control can probably use to connect to you, unless this PC is connected to the Internet through a router or another PC, in which case you will have to check your router to get the correct IP address.

• Click the "OPEN" Button.

The "OPEN" button will be changed to "CLOSE" and Remote Client will be minimized to Tray, which means that this Client PC is waiting for remote controls to connect and take control. When you want to close the Client and disconnect all Controls connected to it, click on the Tray icon to get the Window back, then click the "CLOSE" button. You can then either close the RTC Remote Client application, or change the settings and OPEN it again.

4) Start the RTC Remote Control program on your "Control PC" and set it up ...

Since you want to connect to your "Client", click the "Connect" button (left).

• Enter the Address of your "Client" PC. In most cases, this is what Remote Client program displays in it's "My Address" field. When entering the Address of your Client, you can use the "IP" form (like: 192.168.0.1) or the "Name" form (like: server). In some cases, you can only use the "IP" form (for example, when you connect through internet to a PC that doesn't have a static Address on the Internet). In other cases, it only makes sense to use the "Name" form (for example, when you connect to a PC that uses a Dynamic DNS Service to make its Address appear static on the Internet).

• Enter the Port on which your "Client" is waiting. This is the Port number your Remote Client has entered for "Use Port". Same as for Remote Client, Default Port is here 1974.

• Enter the Username and the Password combination you entered in the RTC Remote Client. It is important that you use exactly the same username and password as you used in Remote Client. Username and Password are case sensitive.

After you have entered this data, you are ready to click on "Desktop", "File Explorer" and/or "Chat", to start a new session. The information you entered won't be lost, as long as you leave the program running. Using one Remote Control, you can open as many sessions (connections) to as many Clients as you please.

Note: The information you entered is only important for establishing a new connection. After you have a working connection (for File Explorer, Desktop or Chat) with the Client of your choice, you can easily connect to another Client (and so be connected to more than one Client at the same time) by entering the information for the other Client and clicking on "File Explorer", "Desktop" and/or "Chat" to open another session.
